SN and SP are API service categories—they describe the oil’s performance level.
API SN (older)
Introduced in 2010
Designed for:
- Engines from 2010 and earlier
- Better protection than SM but less advanced than SP
- Good sludge control
- Compatible with turbo engines
SN Plus (2018 upgrade) added protection against LSPI in turbo GDI engines.
API SP (newer, superior)
Introduced in 2020
Designed for:
- Modern engines (especially turbocharged GDI)
- Stronger performance standards
Benefits of SP over SN:
- Much better LSPI protection (critical for small turbo engines)
- Improved timing chain wear protection
- Better oxidation stability (less oil breakdown at high temps)
- Improved fuel economy
- Better deposit and sludge control
- Enhanced turbocharger protection
Simple Summary
| Feature | API SN | API SP |
|---|---|---|
| Age | Older | Newest |
| LSPI protection | Basic (better in SN Plus) | Excellent |
| Turbo protection | Good | Best |
| Oxidation resistance | Good | Improved |
| Timing chain wear | Standard | Much better |
| Fuel economy | Good | Improved |
| For modern TGDI engines | Acceptable | Highly recommended |
Bottom Line
- SP is the newer, higher-performance standard.
- If your car recommends SP, always use SP.
- If it recommends SN, SP is still safe and better
